Understanding Diabetes

When you eat food, your body turns most of it into sugar (called glucose) and puts it into your blood. If there’s too much sugar, your pancreas sends out insulin.

Insulin is like a key that helps sugar get into your body’s cells to give you energy.

With diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin, or it can’t use it properly.

This means too much sugar stays in your blood, and that can lead to problems like heart disease, eye trouble, and kidney issues.

In Ohio, about 11 out of every 100 adults have diabetes. Each year, around 84,000 adults in Ohio find out they have diabetes.

There isn’t a cure for diabetes yet, but there are ways to manage it. Losing weight, eating healthy, and staying active are important. You can also:

  • Take medicine your doctor gives you.

  • Learn how to manage diabetes and find support.

  • Go to your healthcare appointments.
